An Interview With Bernard Antoine Gendron
February 2009

What is art?
Art is creation, in constant evolution and agitation.  Art does not follow the flow but rather initiates it by being at the same time the reflection of society, which stimulates and inspires it.

What is the role of the artist in society?
Art has the ability to vibrate the traditional side of the brain, the imaginary, and the space where everything is possible, where the space and time are unreal.  The artist brings a bit of dream in the daily reality of modern life.

What technique do you use?
My art is a mixture of painting and sculpture, working in 2 ½ D with lots of texture and relief.  I unite the figurative, abstract, surreal, collage, shadowing and negative space.  In my works, softness merges with force and energy.  The themes are diversified and always inspired by a  “thought that comes from who knows where”.

Which is more important to you, the subject of your painting, or the way it is executed?
In my mind, I see what I want to do, but I let myself be carried away by the imagination, which makes that the final product does not have much to do with the initial idea.  This process gives life to a spontaneous art that transforms the subject in an inventive and unforeseeable outcome.

Where do you do your work?
My studio is at home, therefore permitting me to work whenever I desire.  I always work with an inspired concept.

Do you work from life, or from photographs or from imagination?
From this inspiration, I use photographs, pictures from magazines, images from films and all kinds of other objects that permits me to add texture and relief in my work.  I always let my feelings guide me, without asking questions, without intellectualizing.

What moves you most in life, either to inspire or upset you?
The only criterion that is important to me is that I am enjoying working on a new creation.
